Paul was born November 30, 1932, in Pomona, California and passed into the presence of his Lord on Thursday morning, March 15, 2012 at the age of 79 years. He was the son of Viola (Vaniman) Nevin and George Nevin,Sr. His father passed away at the age of 42 after surgery, when Paul was four. His mother, though handicapped with a cleft palate, was left with five sons and no visible means of support. She was a sincere Christian, but struggled mightily to rear her sons. Paul's home was in San Dimas and Charter Oak, in eastern Los Angeles County, California. He lacked the average childhood and adolescence because of financial pressures and the restrictions his mother placed upon him. At the age of nine, Paul was buying the family groceries by biking to the grocery store, and even doing much of the cooking for his brothers, all of whom were older than he. The older brothers worked to help support the family.
Paul was led to faith in Jesus Christ as Savior by his mother at the age of five. Beginning with his sophomore year in high school, Paul took his commitment to Jesus Christ as Lord of his life very seriously, and felt divinely called to vocational Christian ministry.
The family's financial crunch was softened when Paul's mother received inheritances after the passing of her father and mother in McPherson, Kansas. This relief came just in time to provide an excellent education for Paul, who earned degrees at Azusa Pacific University, Talbot School of Theology, Dallas Theological Seminary, and Wheaton Graduate School.
Paul was active in teaching Sunday School, preaching in a Prison Ministry and in leading Bible classes of many kinds. He was a member of the huge Church of the Open Door in Los Angeles when Dr. J. Vernon McGee was pastor. For a year, Paul taught the Maranatha Class at that church, where 200 to 300 people attended each Sunday. He was also a faculty member at the Los Angeles Bible Training School in the Watts section of Los Angeles.
For 32 years (1963-1995), Paul was a professor of Bible Study Methods, Theology, and Hermeneutics at the Moody Bible Institute. During his teaching career at Moody, he ministered to some 10,000 students in day school, evening school, and summer school. Paul delighted in the diligent teaching of God's Word so that it could go forth. Most of these students are serving our Lord in every part of the world right now. "These were the best years of my life!" reported Paul.
Paul married one of his former students from Moody Bible Institute, Carol Ann Ashby, from Modesto, IL, on July 31, 1965 at the Moody Memorial Church in Chicago. They have three children: Timothy Dwight Nevin of Harper, Liberia, Ruth Ann Nevin Torres (Jorge) of Banyoles, Spain, and Joy Elizabeth Nevin Axelson (Knute) of Northbrook, IL. Paul was a devoted husband and father with a kind spirit and a terrific sense of humor.
Paul and Carol have been members of Calvary Memorial Church, Oak Park, IL; Pleasant Hill Community Church, Wheaton, IL; Wheaton Bible Church, Wheaton, IL and The Orchard Evangelical Free Church of Arlington Heights IL.
Since April 2009, Paul was blessed to reside at Brandel Care Center on campus of The Covenant Village Retirement Community in Northbrook, IL while Carol lived nearby in the independent living section of the same campus. Paul wrote his autobiography titled "My Moody Memoirs" after he retired. It is available for purchase on Amazon.com.
Paul is survived by his wife of forty-six years, Carol, three children and six precious grandchildren, Judah, Lucas, Chantel, and Nathanael Paul Torres, and Soren and Linnea Axelson, and one brother, George Nevin, Jr. of Newport Beach, CA.
"The only truly fulfilling life is found in a personal relationship to Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. Death is but a transition to an infinitely more wonderful life with Him!" - Paul D. Nevin
