Milton Robert Johnson, age 77, a resident of Chicago, died Sunday, October 29, 2006 at the Midwest Palliative and Hospice Care Center in Skokie. He was born on July 4, 1929 in Chicago to Elmer and Martha Johnson.
In 1952 Milton graduated from Northwestern University with a BSME, and then received a MS in Mechanics from Stanford and a Ph.D. ME from Northwestern. After college he worked at Hiller Helicopters, American Steel Foundries and served in the US Army as an engineer. From 1957 until 1969 he worked as a Senior Technical Advisor at General American Transportation Corp. He then worked as a Senior Technical Advisor at Illinois Institute of Technology Research Institute, directing the Railroad Technology Center. He distinguished himself in the field of rail transportation research and was often published in many journals and government reports.
He is survived by his wife Esther, nee Magnuson, three children, Douglas (Jean) Johnson, Cheryl (the late Ernest) Walton and Linda (Michael) McAllister, six grandchildren, Sarah, Rachel, and Elizabeth Walton, Christopher, Erin, and Katya McAllister. He is also survived by his brother Karl Johnson, a cousin, Don (Lori) Johnson and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, Nov. 3 at 7:00 p.m. at Winnetka Covenant Church of Wilmette, 1200 Hibbard Rd., Wilmette. A gathering of friends and family will follow. Interment will be held privately at Graceland Cemetery.
